Just In-Budget Padding Saga:Jubril makes U-turn

The former chairman, House of Representatives committee on appropriation, Abdulmumin Jibrin, has withdrawn his suit challenging his suspensionfrom the House.

Jibrin, a lawmaker from Kano state, was suspended by the House for 180 legislative days following the recommendations by its ethics committee.

The embattled legislator’s suit seeking stop the House from taking action against him was still pending in court at the time of his suspension.

But the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Friday, October 21 struck out Jibrin’s suit, after his counsel, Mr Chukuma Nwachukwu, told the court that his client had filed a notice of discontinuance.

Nwachukwu, told the court that there was a notice of discontinuance filed on October 11, urging the court to discontinue the matter, NAN reports.

The judge, Justice John Tsoho, also declined a request of the defendants for a N200,000 cost, holding that the defendants were “strong institution and personality”.

The counsel to the defendants, Mr Kalu Onuoha, did not oppose the application, but asked for a cost of N200,000 for the processes filed by them.

He said the defendants filed many processes in this case before the court went on vacation in July 2016.

Nwachukwu, however, opposed the application with the fact that the defendants did not filed any defence in this matter.

Recall that Jibrin stirred what experts now described as one Africa’s biggest parliamentary scandals in recent memory on July 21, a day after he was eased out as chairman of the powerful committee.

The lawmaker raised a humongous allegation of fraud against Mr. Dogara and other principal officials of the House.

He accused the speaker of attempting to pad N30 billion into the controversial 2016 budget.

Jibrin also visited law enforcement agencies, including the EFCC, the SSS and the police, where he said he personally submitted petitions detailing evidence of fraudulent manipulation of budget by Mr. Dogara, his deputy Yusuf Lasun, House Whip, Alhassan Doguwa, Minority Leader, Leo Ogor, and nine others.
